SERS manages pension benefits for more than 100 different public sector employers and about a quarter of a million people. Most SERS members are "mandatory," meaning that they are automatically enrolled when they are hired by a SERS-participating employer. A small number are "optional," meaning that they can choose to join a different retirement plan offered by their employer or not join a retirement plan at all. Your HR office will let you know which category you belong to.
